CHAPTER 14

Sins Divided

Vonen looked over at Traven. “Well, we know Father’s still in there fighting.”

“Wait a minute. Sven said that I wasn’t the only one to pull demons. He stated Stellan got all his power at once, and nobody knows how.”

“He can do what you do?”

“Sven doubts it, but he’s sure Stellan has some method that’s as good or better.”

“Sounds like better isn’t the word, Bro. One hundred thousand…” Vonen drew out the last words like a record player slowing to a full stop, the needle still on the LP.

“We need to figure out what kind of demon he has. Holy crap! He said it on one of the videos we’ve seen.” Traven started searching logs while Vonen jacked into his iPod. Five minutes later, Traven said, “Here it is.”

“Bro, I don’t feel like watching that again.”

“No, no. Stellan named the demon as ‘the Demon of Avarice.’ Listen.”

They both watched and listened as Stellan spoke. “I’ve burned out your GodStone and destroyed your Shields. You’ve been asleep at the wheel, Sebastian. I’m AlphaGlyph Master of the Demon of Avarice. So be a good sport and think about your sons and the little wife in the hospital.”

Traven turned to his brother. “The Demon of Avarice is even known to the humans as the false God of mammon, Mathew 6:24 and Luke 16:13. He’s also listed as one of the seven princes of hell.”

“Why are you so sure that’s the demon?”

“He’s one of the big seven; remember the seven deadly sins?”

“Sloth, he’s a demon in one of my games,” replied Vonen.

“This is serious. Look, I’ll name them for you. Lucifer is the Demon of Pride, Asmodeus is the Demon of Lust, Leviathan is the Demon of Envy, Beelzebub is the Demon of Gluttony, Satan is the Demon of Wrath, Belphegor is the Demon of Sloth, and our guy Mammon is the Demon of Greed. These are honorary human titles to enhance allegories in Christian religions, but the seven demons are real. What’s not real is the boundaries for evil as the human descriptions imply. All seven can be the demon of wrath, not just Satan. For all we really know, all seven could be Elven demons. Ancient Elves locked in their own realm by Ancient Clan Masters.”

“Bro, why didn’t you remember all this with your photographic memory the first time?”

“I don’t always remember what I’m supposed to remember. I have to have triggers like I got today.”

“Well, regardless of what demon he has, its kick-ass strong, and we need to find out how Stellan got it,” said Vonen.

“Good point, but until that happens, I have to get more essence the hard way. Speaking of memory, Sven will want to see your journal.” Traven was smiling; he already knew Vonen hadn’t worked on it yet.

“Oh, the journal.”

“Before I forget, I got something for you,” Traven said with a broadening smile, “It’s a girl.”

“Traven! You shouldn’t have! Is she in my room? In a cake? Come on, Bro; where is she?”

Frowning at Vonen, Traven held up the card for him.
